Native App or PWA: Which Should You Choose?
It's one of the first decisions in any app project. Native or PWA? Both have their place. Here are the differences, the advantages and the costs of each format, so you can choose with full knowledge.
What is a native app?
A native app is downloaded from the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). It installs like any other app, makes the most of the phone's capabilities (notifications, camera, performance) and offers the smoothest experience. In exchange, it requires publishing on the stores and a slightly higher budget.
What is a PWA?
A PWA (Progressive Web App) is a web app that installs directly from the browser, without going through the stores. The user adds the icon to their home screen and opens it like a real app. It's faster and more affordable to deploy, and updates instantly.
The comparison at a glance
- Installation: native = via the stores. PWA = from the browser, in one click.
- Experience: native = maximal. PWA = excellent for most use cases.
- Push notifications: native = full support. PWA = available (depending on the device).
- Cost and timeline: PWA = faster and more affordable. Native = a slightly higher investment.
- Store visibility: native = present on the App Store and Google Play. PWA = no.
How to decide?
Choose a PWA if you want to launch quickly, keep the budget under control, and reach everyone without depending on the stores. Choose native if store presence and the maximal experience are strategic for you. And very often, the best answer is both: start with a PWA, then publish a native version as the project grows.
